Laurel County Photos

The gallery opened with a view described as the former George Washington Freeman homeplace on Freeman Branch Road in Laurel County, photographed by Janet Freeman Auman. A second caption identified “The Barn” on Freeman Branch Road, also photographed by Janet Freeman Auman.

Freeman family captions

One photograph was captioned “John William and Adelia Alderson Freeman,” identifying John William as the son of George Washington and Martha Parker Freeman. The photographer was unknown.

Another family group was captioned, from left, Edward “Ned” Freeman as a boy, Reverend George Washington Freeman, Eliza Ann Freeman Creech, Minnie Bet Freeman, Marg Alice Freeman, Felix Freeman, a dog named General Sherman, and White Freeman. The photographer was unknown. A note said George Washington Freeman was a second lieutenant in Company A of the 24th Kentucky Infantry during the Civil War and was made a temporary captain at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia. The caption cited Boys of Laurel by Dr. James White Freeman. Martha Parker Freeman, John William Freeman, and Grant Freeman were noted as not pictured.

A separate photograph showed Martha Parker Freeman, wife of Reverend George Washington Freeman. Its photographer was also unknown.

Other gallery headings

The page also named the Fredrick Lincks family, the White Freeman family, Levi Jackson, and a Camp Wildcat reenactment. Those headings carried little or no accompanying caption text.

The navigation placed the gallery beside separate pages called “Laurel County Photos,” “What’s in the Branches,” and “Can You Help Identify This Family.” That structure suggests photographs were used both as local-history illustrations and as evidence that visitors might help identify.
