Cemeteries
The Society endeavored to locate every cemetery in Laurel County and record information from each tombstone. The information included names and birth and death dates. Some stones listed military service, wedding dates, and the names of children, parents, or other relatives. The Society recorded those details, along with other information that might be of genealogical interest. Each book was fully indexed and contained detailed directions for reaching the cemeteries.
Five sections of the county
The county was divided into five geographic sections for the cemetery series:
- Northeast: east of Kentucky Highway 490 and north of the Hal Rogers Parkway.
- Northwest: west of Kentucky Highway 490 and north of Kentucky Highway 80 West, also known as the Russell Dyche Memorial Highway.
- Southeast: east of Interstate 75 and south of the Hal Rogers Parkway.
- Southwest: west of Interstate 75 and south of Kentucky Highway 80 West.
- London Area: bounded by Interstate 75 on the west, the Hal Rogers Parkway on the north and east, and the Kentucky 192 Bypass on the south.
Volumes described in the catalog
The catalog listed volumes for the northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest, and London areas. The southeast set was bound in two alphabetically arranged volumes: the first covered cemeteries from Amburgey–Rose Garden through McFadden, and the second from McHargue through York. The page emphasized that each book was fully indexed.
The directions and indexing were part of the publication method, not merely sales detail. Dividing the county into named sections helped a reader place a small family cemetery within a broader landscape, while the name index made it possible to move from an individual entry back to the cemetery where it was recorded.
The catalog also displayed prices, postage charges, check instructions, and a mailing address. Those historical ordering details do not constitute a current offer to sell.
